When I entered Naval Service and became a SEAL Officer (1980), the World was largely Black and White, in terms of Adversaries and Threats to the United States. Today, our Military Commanders are forced to interpret what and who a “Competitor”, “Adversary”, or “Terrorist” is, and to be aware of our Nation’s Policies and Political Climate, which tend to be fickle.
Further, U.S. domestic distractions and political divisions in the past pale in comparison to today’s Wokeness, Equality, and other controversial issues. This ambiguous and treacherous environment for Military Commanders at every level could make for cautious, conservative, and sometimes delayed decisions, which often leads to Missed Opportunities or Mission Failure.
Bio:
Sean Averell Pybus (born September 22, 1957) is a retired United States Navy Vice Admiral who last served as the deputy Commander, U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) from 2014 to 2016. He previously served as the Commander, Naval Special Warfare Command from 2011 to 2013.
