Letter from Congressman Francis Rooney
Dear Friend,
I ran for public office and serve for the right reasons – to help our local communities, stand on principle to set our nation on the right path, and to give back to the country that has given so much to us.
Unfortunately, I’ve found that many others are fully submerged in the D.C. swamp. And we’ve see the disaster created by the insider career politicians, who answer to the lobbyists and special interests as they drive our nation over a fiscal cliff.
That’s why I’m strong supporter of common-sense legislation to return the public servant mentality to Washington that our Founding Fathers envisioned!
The Thomas Jefferson Public Service Act would reduce the salary of a Member of Congress to $1 per year, after they serve six terms in the House or two terms in the Senate.
Want to hear a staggering figure? Even accounting for inflation, if Members of Congress today earned what our Founding Fathers were paid, it would be about 10% of what they earn now.
Serving in Congress was not meant to be a lucrative career, or a stepping stone to an even more lucrative career such as lobbying for the special interests.
I will be voting strongly in the affirmative when this legislation comes up for a vote in the U.S. House, and I will be urging my colleagues to do so as well.
Sincerely,
Francis Rooney
